Escape from Mundane Drinks: Light Your Fire with a Feuerzangenbowle

Almost every village in Germany has its own Christkindlemarkt or as American’s would say a Christmas Market. There are treats to delight, from one to ninety-two! There is kinderpunsch (a warm child-friendly Christmas Punch), Glühwein (hot mulled wine), a large assortment of food and gingerbread, beautiful crafts, and an abundance of toys.

When I was out shopping, several years ago, I found this beautiful feuerzangenbowle. I didn’t really know how Glühwein was made, so I figured it was how you make it. I was mistaken but happily surprised. A feuerzangenbowle (Fire Tongs Punch) is a traditional German alcoholic beverage where a rum-soaked sugarloaf is lit on fire. The Fire melts and caramelizes the sugar and it drips into mulled wine. The sugarloaf, Zuckerrhut (sugar hat) is a cone of sugar that you can make at home if you cannot find one.

Feuerzangenbowle

2Oranges (unwaxed)
2Lemons (unwaxed)
2 BottlesRed Wine* (2 Liters)
1Cinnamon Stick
5Cloves
1 DashGround Ginger
1 DashGround Cardamom
1Sugar Cone
2 CupsBrown Rum (at least 54% alcohol)

Wash Citrus fruit, Pat it dry and slice into rounds. You can substitute the Lemons for an additional Orange.

In a large pot combine the red wine, Citrus, and whole spices. Slowly heat the wine, but don’t let it boil.

Remove the Pot from  the stove and pour into your bowl. (The bowl should be able to be heated, like a fondue pot). Add ginger and Cardamom.

Place the sugar cone about 1″ above the surface. You can use special fire tongs, like I have, or you can use a wire netting to place the cone over.

Next comes the fun! Soak your sugar with rum and light the alcohol on fire. The sugar will melt and drip into the wine. Carefully add more rum in small quantities to keep the fire going until the sugar cone is spent. (I highly recommend using a metal ladle).

Tips:

Use a hearty dry red wine.

It is important that the rum is over 54% alcohol. To be safe, I always uses 151. It also burns better if the rum is room temperature.

To make a sugar cone you need 2 ingredients (granulated sugar & Water) and a cone shaped pilsner glass. Mix sugar with just a little water like a nice packing sand for sand castles. Add to your glass and tamp it down. Rough up the top of the surface with a fork between adding layers to ensure there aren’t seams that will break when you remove it from the glass.

Turn the glass over and pop out the sugar cone. If it breaks start over. If it doesn’t break, let it sit out and dry. It will solidify and you will be able to pick it up in one piece!

SAFETY: Be VERY cautious. You are handling alcohol and fire. Take the necessary precautions.

Simply Crafted Cocktails: Who Spiked the Eggnog?

Eggnog is a polarizing flavor, but whether you love it or hate it, it’s a Christmas Classic.  I am sure one day I will go the extra mile and learn the completely homemade technique, but this year I went to the liquor store and bought a delightful bottle.

  • Step one: Get a rocks or Bourbon glass
  • Step two: Pour chilled Eggnog into the glass
  • Step three: Dust the top with some freshly grated nutmeg (or just from your pantry)
  • Enjoy!

Fins to the Right: Fantastic Make and Take Tailgating Cocktails

When thinking about the tailgating event, I wanted people to have a secondary option to the Finding Nemo cocktail. I also took color into consideration. We had a bright blue cocktail, what would be colorful, potent, and complimentary?

When I stumbled across the recipe for Tropical Island Iced Tea I was beyond excited! It seemed perfect for our event and I was not disappointed. Its rosy pink color from the guava nectar was a perfect pair for our tropical blue. For the Tailgate I actually served these in pint-size (16oz) jars so they were pre-measured, had space for ice, and ready to enjoy!

Tropical Island Iced Tea

1 ozDark Spiced Rum
1 ozGin
1 ozVodka
1 ozTequila
1 ozTriple Sec or Cointreau
2 ozGuava Nectar
2 ozClub Soda or Seltzer (or to taste)
1 ozFresh Lime Juice
 Lime Wedges as Garnish

Pour everything except the club soda into a Collins Glass filled with ice and top with Club Soda*. Gently stir your drink and garnish with a lime wedge.

*Tip: Use a spiral bar spoon and pour carbonated mixers down the spoon handle. This will get the most bubbles down into the drink.

A word of caution, these drinks are VERY strong, it should be apparent by the sheer number of alcohols in this concoction, but it is more than 1 standard drink’s worth of liquor.

A secondary word of caution, don’t mix these up with some Carolina-style vinegary BBQ sauce, in the dim lights of the parking lot they may look the same, but they do not taste the same!!! (I may or may not speak from personal experience).

Fins to the Left: Fantastic Make and Take Tailgating Cocktails

Inspired by our tailgating trip to see Jimmy Buffet, I wanted to make some grab and go cocktails that were on-theme! I felt like a margarita for Margaritaville was perhaps too on the nose, so I went searching for tropical, fun, and tasty cocktails to bring along.

As I was perusing various recipes, I stumbled across the Finding Nemo! I loved the cocktail garnish the most.

Finding Nemo

1 ozCoconut Rum
.75 ozHypnotiq
.5 ozLime Juice
.25ozPineapple Juice
.25 ozBlue Curacao
GarnishSwedish Fish

To create this drink, pour all of your liquids into a cocktail shaker. Add ice, cover, and shake for about 12 seconds*. Strain into a cocktail glass (Coupe or Martini any glass you choose). Garnish with a Swedish Fish.

*To prepare ahead and serve in half-pint jars, simply pour liquids into each jar. When it’s time to serve them, shake and strain on the spot, or simply have them pre-chilled.

To get your fish to float, you can serve instead in a Collins Glass with lots of ice. Gently place your fish on the ice to help it float!
